Numerous types of stairs exist, from the most imaginative to the most classic… To each his own style. The materials used to construct them are as diverse as wood, glass, metal and naturally stone. Listed here are the most common types of stairs in stone.
Stairs
Spiralled quarter
Spiralled quarter: most often used in homes, hotels, and office buildings..., this type of staircase changes direction as it rises customarily to a full 90°.
Return stair
Return stair: a return stair divides the run, reversing direction a full 180 degrees at a landing. It allows for a pause in the run, a change in direction or a separation of two flights of stairs from different directions.
Self-supporting stairs
Self-supporting stairs: generally in stone, this stairway has the particularity of supporting itself. It also creates a space beneath it which can be used. In spite of the absence of support, it is very solid and safe. It can be circular, straight or with a quarter turn.
Spiral stairs
Sprial stairs: an arrangement commonly found in castles and medieval architecture. The stone steps spiral around a central straight axe.
Helical stairs
Helical stairs: often used to save space a helix-style spiral has a curving center support that follows the sweeping twist of the stairs.
Finish on stairs
Stone steps can be slippery especially when wet. To remedy this there are several finishes used to diminish slipperyness often due to the patina of the stone. Today, almost anything can be done to stone.
